9/27/2017
This year our Watermelon Rind Pickles won 2nd place at the Texas State Fair! We were so excited to get this news from the fair officials. Friends and family assured me if the judges had working taste buds my product would win. They were right!!!

Bonton Farm

9/26/2017
Providence Preserves is proud to support the efforts of the Bonton Urban Farming community. Some of the healthiest veggies I've ever seen are growing there. On one visit, I had the pleasure of sampling some fresh broccoli. It was delicious! On another visit, I purchased onions that were used in batches of Squash Pickles, and Pepper Onion Relish.
You would not expect to see chickens and goats at Bonton but they are there! My granddaughter loved petting the goats.

Bonton is a South Dallas community where poverty is rampant and jobs are scarce. It is also a “Food Desert”, where access to healthy foods is practically  non-existent.
The three beer & wine stores in the Bonton area have food that is sometimes over-priced and over processed. This greatly impacts  the health of the neighborhood. This is why having the farm there is crucial for the residents.

The people of the Bonton community believes the  neighborhood should change from within, driven by them, using their own hands. So, in an effort to do this, they have launched Bonton Farms.
I hope it continues to thrive and grow and one day cease to be a food desert but become a food oasis for the residents there.

Buying Fresh & in season produce

9/26/2017
I’ve always believed using in-season fresh fruits and vegetables in my preserves without artificial ingredients, made them taste better. I understand artificial preservatives will extend the shelf life but this is something I’ve also found – once you open the jar, they will not last very long anyway! Yes, I think they are that good! (Gentle reminder- always refrigerate the jars once they have been opened).

Here is to fresh jam on your toast, delicious relish on your sandwich and savory pickles with dinner! Bon Appetite!

    Greetings

I believe there is something very special about making
preserves. Although it seems labor intense to some people it is pure joy for me! It's almost therapeutic. I love to stand and stir a boiling pot containing fresh fruit. The scent is tantalizing! But, better than cooking the product  is seeing the end result of filled jars with delicious goodness. I hope you will enjoy eating the jams and pickles as much as I enjoy making them.
    O taste and see.....
