Bonton Farm
9/26/2017
Providence Preserves is proud to support the efforts of the Bonton Urban Farming community. Some of the healthiest veggies I've ever seen are growing there. On one visit, I had the pleasure of sampling some fresh broccoli. It was delicious! On another visit, I purchased onions that were used in batches of Squash Pickles, and Pepper Onion Relish.
You would not expect to see chickens and goats at Bonton but they are there! My granddaughter loved petting the goats. Bonton is a South Dallas community where poverty is rampant and jobs are scarce. It is also a “Food Desert”, where access to healthy foods is practically non-existent. The three beer & wine stores in the Bonton area have food that is sometimes over-priced and over processed. This greatly impacts the health of the neighborhood. This is why having the farm there is crucial for the residents. The people of the Bonton community believes the neighborhood should change from within, driven by them, using their own hands. So, in an effort to do this, they have launched Bonton Farms. I hope it continues to thrive and grow and one day cease to be a food desert but become a food oasis for the residents there. |
